A railroad tie wall is built out of 7×9 inch used railroad ties. They are heavily treated with preservatives to prevent rot and last longer. These walls are usually your cheapest option when building a wall. A properly installed railroad tie retaining wall will last anywhere between 10-20 years. During construction of the wall we use large spikes to nail the ties together. Due to their weaker nature we don’t recommend building higher than 6 ft with a railroad tie wall.

The 6×6 timber wall is a step up from the railroad tie. They are smaller in size but gain strength from having a better fit and ability to use better anchoring techniques. The railroad tie walls are usually less visually appealing. When we use the railroad ties they are used and have been for a few years. The 6×6 are all brand new and you even have the option for staining them.
