Drainage and Erosion Control

Why Doesn’t your yard drain properly?

In most cases the slope of your yard is off and your soil is mostly compacted clay. If there are any dips or valleys that will hold water your yard can become a mess pretty quick. North Ga Clay doesn’t help with things at all. We live in some horrible conditions during the winter rainy season and it can reek havoc on your grass and yard. There are several basic factors when your evaluating your drainage issue. First, your yards slope should be graded correctly and level any dips or high spots. Second, what kind of soil do you have? If you are in a new development you can almost guarantee the developers just put down fill dirt (dense clay). This is the worst thing to be working with. Water doesn’t seep through it and when it rains daily in the winter it makes a thick mud.

Things to look for when fixing drainage and erosion problems.

  1. Where does the water come from and can you divert it or control it with a dry creek bed or french drain?
  2. Does the area need regrading?
  3. Are your down spouts from your gutters causing issues?
  4. Are you irrigating to much or do you have a leak?

What are your options to fix you Erosion and Drainage problems?

We have already mentioned some options like french drains and dry creek beds but those are expensive and are mainly used for larger water flows. Each site will be evaluated and a drainage system with design to your landscape. On the more affordable side of things is burying your downspouts. This service costs around $13/ft with the average job costing $300-$800. Any water we can divert and keep off your precious grass is a plus.

Downspout Burial

When we provide an estimate for drainage issues, the first thing we look at is whether the downspouts from your gutters are buried. If they are not buried, this can contribute to erosion and drainage problems. Diverting the water from your downspouts can save you money and prevent frustration. Downspout burial involves attaching a pipe to your gutter system and burying it to redirect the water. This service typically costs $12-15 per linear foot of pipe/channel, depending on site conditions and the layout of your landscaping.

Over time, if your gutters are not cleaned regularly, the downspout pipes can become clogged or collapse from the pressure of the water. We also offer a downspout cleanout and repair service for older homes that have had a downspout drainage system for many years.

French Drain

You should think of a French drain as a underground sponge that pipes excess water to a better place. French drains are pipes surrounded by a course aggregate to filter out sediment and dirt. The picture below details the construction of the french drain. This pipe is perforated so it will absorb the water in the channel. Then water then runs out the pipe, effectively diverting run off water.

Dry Creek Bed

Dry creek beds are an effective way to control surface water on your property. We create a shallow channel and line it with fabric and larger rocks to prevent soil erosion and slow the flow of water. Dry creek beds are often used on borders near fences or edges of beds, and can even be used as a main feature in your landscaping. Let us help you incorporate this functional and attractive element into your outdoor space.

Red Georgia Clay Drainage

Most minor lawn and garden drainage issues in North GA are caused by our clay soil. If you see water running or standing on your lawn after a heavy rain, it is likely that you have drainage problems. Clay soil is denser than sandy or loamy soil, so it takes longer for rainwater to filter through it. To improve the drainage of clay soil, we recommend aerating the soil with a core aerator to loosen it up, and then applying a sand/compost mix on top. This process, called top dressing, opens up pores in the clay and allows water to be absorbed more easily. It also helps to level and grade your yard. This can all be done without removing your grass – the sand/compost mix is simply spread on top and the grass will grow back within a few days.

Perc Tank Installation

Sometimes the best option is to install a perc tank. A perc tank is a small reservoir underground that will hold excess water in heavy rains. The tank will slowly release the water into the ground similar to your septic system. If you are having issue diverting your runoff this will probably be your best option.
