Why do you Need Fresh Mulch?

Having fresh mulch is very important in the maintenance of your flower beds. Mulch guards your flowerbeds against weed growth. Not only does it help prevent weeds but it is a buffer against both heat and cold temperatures for your plants. Mulch also helps prevent root rot and decreases soil compaction.

Different Types of Mulch

Barber Landscaping carries eleven (11) different types of mulches with different textures, color, and prices. All of our mulches will help retain moisture in the ground and breakdown to form a nutrient dense layer so plants will grow healthier. As mulch break down, it adds top soil to your ground. As good top soil layer is developed, worms will move in adding nutrients. Pine bark mulches will break down the quickest, then hardwood barks, then the dyed products. All mulches will last approximately six months to a year. We recommend putting mulch down 2″ thick. You will have to mulch every year to maintain your flower beds. The second year, you should put down another 2″. By the 3rd year, you will have a good base of top soil and will only need approximately 1 inch for top dressing.

  • Dyed Mulch – This mulch is mainly used around trees, shrubs, and in large open areas for contract. All of our mulch is ground and screened for dirt and debris and then dyed your favorite color (red, brown, black). The dye is eco-friendly and will last approx. six month to one year.
  • Pine Bark Mulch – We also carry Pine bark nuggets, Pine bark mini, and Large nuggets. This product is great around acid loving plants (slick leaf evergreens).
  • Cypress Mulch – cypress mulch is excellent for playground areas. It is certified I.P.M.A. and A.S.T.M. F 1292-96. Cypress is a natural deterrent for insects because of its odor. Cypress mulch does not decay as much as other mulches. To maintain your cypress mulch you will need to turn it every 6 months. By turning it, it will last about 2 years. If you do not turn it you will have to top it off roughly every year.

Below are a few options we have on Mulch:

Brown Dyed Hardwood
Mini Pine Nuggets
Mini Pine

Mulch Alternatives

Deco Pebbles
Pea Pebbles
Volcanic Rock

Rock is a great alternative to mulch because you will not have to maintain it quite as much as wood mulch. It doesn’t fade, and can look better throughout the year. However, you will lose the benefits that decomposing mulch has to offer. Rock will not be constantly adding more nutrient to your garden soil.
