Thoughtful Planting & Outdoor Design That Brings Your Vision to Life

North Georgia’s climate—hot, humid summers, occasional cold snaps, and heavy red clay soil—presents unique challenges and opportunities for planting and landscape design. Red clay compacts easily, drains poorly, and can limit root growth, while our native pines and oaks influence natural aesthetics. Proper plant selection, soil prep, and design layout make all the difference in creating a yard that’s low-maintenance, resilient, and beautiful year-round.

At Barber Landscaping & Lawn Care, we specialize in sod installation for quick, lush lawns; privacy tree planting to create serene, secluded spaces; and custom outdoor design that turns ordinary yards into inviting retreats. Whether you’re starting fresh with new sod, artificial turf, adding evergreen privacy screens to block views and noise, or redesigning beds for better flow and curb appeal, we handle it all with attention to detail and local expertise.

Our goal: Deliver a personalized outdoor space that thrives in Georgia conditions—improving privacy, boosting property value, and giving you an enjoyable yard without constant upkeep.

Sod Installation

Get an instant, vibrant lawn with professional sod installation. We prepare your red clay soil properly (amending for drainage and nutrients), lay high-quality warm-season varieties suited to Georgia (like Zoysia or Bermuda), and ensure tight seams for seamless growth. Ideal for new homes, bare spots, or full lawn renovations—spring and early fall are prime times for best establishment.

Shrub & Ornamental Planting

Add color, texture, and structure with shrubs, perennials, and accent plants. We choose acid-loving varieties (azaleas, camellias) for pine-influenced soil and sun-tolerant options for open areas—creating layered beds that support pollinators, provide seasonal interest, and complement your overall design.

Privacy Tree Planting

Create natural barriers and peaceful outdoor living with expertly selected and planted privacy trees. We recommend fast-growing, evergreen options that thrive in North Georgia’s climate, such as Emerald Green Arborvitae, Green Giant Arborvitae, Eastern Red Cedar, or Cryptomeria Japonica—dense foliage for year-round screening against neighbors, roads, or wind. Proper spacing, soil prep, and staking ensure healthy establishment and long-term performance.

Spring (March–May) and early fall (September–October) are best times for sod installation in North Georgia. Bermuda sod can be installed year round. These seasons provide mild temperatures and consistent moisture for root establishment before summer heat or winter cold. Avoid mid-summer extremes to prevent stress.

It is highly recommended however, we have seen plenty of successful installs without it. We work closely with irrigation installers and will give recommendations and price info if needed.

Fast-growing, evergreen options like Emerald Green, Green Giant Arborvitae, and Cryptomeria Japonica thrive in our climate and clay soil. They offer dense screening, deer resistance (in some cases), and year-round privacy—perfect for blocking neighbors or roads. We do not recommend planting Leyland Cypress.

We amend compacted clay with organic matter (compost), improve drainage, and level the area properly. This encourages deep roots, prevents pooling, and helps new sod or trees establish quickly in Forsyth County conditions.

You can plant trees, shrubs, sod, and most other landscape plants year-round in North Georgia (including Cumming and Forsyth County), especially with proper care like consistent watering and soil prep. That said, certain seasons carry higher risks due to our hot, humid summers and occasional deep winter freezes.

High-risk periods to avoid heavy planting:

  • Mid-summer (July–August): Intense heat waves and dry spells stress new plants, making root establishment difficult—even with extra watering, transplant shock is common.
  • Deep winter (mid-December through January): Hard freezes and cold snaps can damage tender new roots or cause dieback, particularly for non-hardy varieties.

Ideal windows for best results:

  • Late winter to early summer (late February through June): Mild spring temperatures, warming soil, and reliable rainfall help roots develop quickly before summer heat arrives. This is prime time for sod installation (soil temps hit 65°F+ by mid-April) and most trees/shrubs.
  • Early fall to early winter (September through December): Cooler air reduces top-growth stress while soil stays warm enough for strong root growth—often the absolute best season overall for trees, privacy screens, and perennials in our climate. Plants get months to settle in before next summer’s challenges.

By timing your planting to these lower-stress periods, you give everything a head start: deeper roots for drought resistance, better establishment, and healthier long-term performance in Georgia’s red clay and variable weather.

We always assess your specific yard, plant choices, and current conditions during our free on-site consultation to recommend the optimal timing—ensuring success no matter the season. Ready to plan your planting? Get your on-the-spot quote today!

We serve Cumming, Milton, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Dawsonville, Suwanee, and most of Forsyth County—proudly local and ready to help. We will travel father but we get picky about what kind of job it is when traveling longer distances.

We do not offer a warranty on sod installation.

Unfortunately, the long-term success of sod depends far more on proper aftercare than on the installation itself. New sod needs consistent watering (especially during the first 2–4 weeks), correct mowing height, and protection from foot traffic, heat stress, or drought while roots establish deeply into your soil. We provide clear, easy-to-follow instructions for sod care and tree and shrub care and guidance during and after installation to set you up for success—but if the sod isn’t maintained as recommended, it may not survive, and we cannot guarantee against issues caused by insufficient watering, neglect, animals, or environmental factors.

For plants, trees, and shrubs, we do offer a replacement warranty to give you added confidence. If a plant fails to thrive and we determine (through inspection) that the issue stems from factors beyond normal care (e.g., transplant shock, poor establishment despite proper watering, or a defect in the plant itself—not customer neglect, over/under-watering, or extreme weather events), we will replace it at no additional labor charge. The customer is responsible for purchasing the replacement plant at our wholesale cost (typically 20–40% below retail, depending on the item). This ensures you’re only paying for the plant itself, not redundant installation fees.

This policy reflects our commitment to quality work and honest expectations: we stand behind our planting expertise, but success ultimately requires teamwork between us and you on ongoing care. During your free on-site consultation, we’ll walk through exactly what aftercare looks like for your specific sod, trees, or shrubs—so you know precisely how to keep everything healthy and thriving long-term.

If you have questions about aftercare tips or want to discuss warranty details for your project, we’re happy to cover it during your quote!
