Durable Hardscapes & Outdoor Living That Extend Your Home Year-Round

North Georgia’s unique red clay soil—dense, iron-rich, and notoriously poor-draining—combined with our frequent heavy rainfall, humid summers, and occasional winter freezes, creates real challenges for hardscaping projects. This soil compacts tightly, absorbs water slowly, expands when wet, and shrinks when dry, which can lead to shifting bases, cracking in patios or driveways, poor long-term stability, and erosion on slopes if not properly addressed.

That’s why we focus on strong foundations, excellent drainage integration (like permeable pavers or gravel bases), and designs that account for expansion/contraction cycles. Proper grading, reinforcement, and material choices help prevent erosion, pooling, and movement—ensuring your paver patio, retaining wall, fire pit, or outdoor kitchen stays level, durable, and beautiful for decades in Forsyth County conditions.

At Barber Landscaping & Lawn Care, we create custom hardscapes and outdoor living features that solve these issues while transforming your backyard into a functional, inviting extension of your home. From paver patios and concrete driveways for seamless entertaining, to retaining walls (block, timber, or natural stone) that manage slopes and prevent erosion, to cozy fire pits/fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, seating walls, boulder accents, rock veneer accents, and landscape lighting that bring evenings to life—we handle it all with precision and local know-how.

Our designs prioritize low-maintenance beauty, safety, and value: extending usability through all seasons, boosting curb appeal/property worth, and creating gathering spots for family, friends, and relaxation. Whether you’re adding a flagstone-style patio, a full outdoor kitchen for year-round cooking, or integrated lighting for ambiance and security, we build to last in Forsyth County conditions.

Our Hardscapes & Outdoor Living Services

Paver Patios & Walkways

Timeless, permeable paver patios (concrete, brick, or natural stone styles) create level entertaining areas that handle Georgia's freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rain with excellent drainage. We install with proper base prep to prevent shifting—perfect for dining, lounging, or pool surrounds.

Retaining Walls (Block, Timber, or Boulder)

Engineered retaining walls stabilize slopes, prevent erosion, and create usable flat space. We use segmental concrete blocks for clean modern lines, timber for natural/rustic appeal, or natural stone/rock veneer for premium aesthetics—all with proper drainage (weep holes, gravel backfill) to handle Georgia's clay and rain.

Concrete Patios, Driveways & Features

Durable poured or stamped concrete patios and driveways offer affordability, customization (patterns, colors, textures), and strength against red clay movement. Ideal for larger areas or modern looks—low-maintenance and crack-resistant with proper reinforcement. Concrete is the most affordable patio option available.

We handle all our work in-house—no subcontractors or third-party crews. Our team consists of dedicated, long-term crew members who have been with Barber Landscaping for years. They know our exact processes, high standards, and commitment to doing things right.

We take great care in selecting honest, reliable, and trustworthy people you can feel comfortable having in your home. When you hire us, you’re getting a familiar team that treats your property like their own, with the same attention to detail, respect, and professionalism you’d expect from family.

We’re proud of our loyal crew—they’re the backbone of the reliable, high-quality work our Cumming neighbors have come to trust. If peace of mind matters to you when someone’s working at your home, we’ve got you covered.

We primarily use Keystone and Belgaurd Products for our patios and walls. Belgaurd is the higher end selection and will add $1-2 per sq. ft. to the price. We recommend customers see the color and design option in person at Mountain Stone on Hwy 141 or at a Stovall Landscape Material location near you.

We do not recommend and Lowes or Home Depot Products.

Maintenance is minimal: sweep paver patios/seating walls regularly to remove debris, reseal pavers/stone every 2–3 years for stain protection, clean fire pits of ash/soot, and inspect retaining walls annually for cracks or leaning (especially after heavy rain). Avoid harsh chemicals—use mild soap and a pressure washer on low setting. We provide care instructions at completion and can offer follow-up sealing or repairs.

Generally, no—we do not accept customer-supplied materials for paver patios, retaining walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, concrete features, boulder installations, rock veneer, or other hardscape elements.

We carefully select brands and suppliers we have long-standing relationships with, which allows us to secure wholesale pricing, consistent quality, and reliable delivery timelines. In the past, when customers have provided their own materials, we’ve encountered frequent issues including:

  • Significant project delays from mismatched or backordered items
  • Inconsistent quality (e.g., variations in paver color/thickness, block strength, or stone durability)
  • Compatibility problems with our installation methods and warranties
  • Additional labor time to correct or rework substandard materials

By handling all sourcing ourselves, we ensure everything arrives on schedule, matches our high standards, and integrates seamlessly for a professional, long-lasting result. You get the benefit of our discounted wholesale rates, proven products suited to Georgia’s red clay soil and weather, and a smoother, more predictable process from start to finish.

Our focus is on delivering a worry-free experience—so let us take care of the materials and installation details while you enjoy the final outdoor living space. If you have a specific product in mind, we’re happy to discuss comparable options during your free on-site consultation and quote!

Small patios or fire pits: 3–7 days. Full outdoor kitchens/retaining walls: 2–6 weeks, depending on scope. We provide realistic timelines during your quote.

In most cases, no permit is required for standard residential fire pits or outdoor fireplaces, especially portable units or simple built-in wood-burning designs that meet basic safety setbacks (typically 25 feet from structures and combustible materials). However, gas-fired installations (natural gas or propane lines) or larger built-in fire features (e.g., extensive masonry fireplaces tied into hardscapes) often require a permit and inspection to ensure proper gas line installation, venting, and compliance with local fire codes.

For retaining walls:

  • Walls under 4 feet in height (measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall) generally do not require a permit in Forsyth County and most surrounding areas.
  • Walls 4 feet or taller, or any wall that supports a surcharge load (such as a driveway, parking area, pool, or structure near a house foundation), will require a building permit and engineering review to verify structural integrity, drainage, and soil stability—especially important on our red clay soils prone to movement and erosion.

We stay current on local codes in Cumming, Forsyth County, and nearby cities (Milton, Johns Creek, Alpharetta). During your free on-site consultation, we’ll evaluate your specific project, confirm whether permits are needed, and handle the permitting process if required—at no extra surprise cost to you. This ensures your paver patio, fire pit, retaining wall, or outdoor living feature is safe, compliant, and built to last.

Absolutely—retaining walls, terracing, French drains, and properly sloped patios are excellent solutions for erosion and poor drainage in red clay soil. Walls hold back soil on hillsides, create flat usable space, and direct water away from foundations. We incorporate gravel backfill, perforated pipes, and weep holes to manage runoff—preventing pooling, washouts, and foundation issues common after heavy Forsyth County rains.
