Typically once or twice a year—spring and fall are ideal. Longleaf pine straw lasts longer than most mulches (up to 12 months), but refreshing keeps beds looking sharp, weeds easier to manage, and plants protected.
Typically it can include blowing/raking leaves & debris, edging beds, hauling away waste, and light trimming as needed. It all depends on what you need exactly and we price it accordingly. Typical cleanups can range from $200 to $800 but for some larger properties with a lot of debris it can be in the thousands.
It all depends on your plants and landscape—pine straw is excellent for acid-loving plants, erosion control, and hills, while mulch works well for color and heavier coverage. We’ll recommend what’s best for your space and budget. Pine straw is usually around half the price of mulch so larger areas typically have pine straw spread and feature areas front of the house have mulch.

Really it comes down to your preference.
We strongly advise against using landscape fabric in your beds—in fact, we won’t install it as part of our services.
While it may seem like a quick fix for weeds, it often harms plant health over time. The fabric restricts proper water infiltration, causing moisture to pool or concentrate on the surface instead of soaking deeply into the soil. As a result, plant roots tend to grow shallow and spread horizontally along the top layer (searching for water), rather than developing a strong, deep root system. This makes plants more vulnerable to drought, heat stress, nutrient deficiencies, and overall poor long-term health.
We prefer natural, breathable methods like thick organic mulch (such as our premium Longleaf pine straw) that suppress weeds effectively while allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots freely—promoting healthier, more resilient plants and better soil biology.
If you’re dealing with weed issues or bed maintenance, we’d be happy to recommend better alternatives during your free on-site consultation!
We go into more detail in our post on 6 Reasons Why Landscaping Fabric is a Bad Idea.
ou can lightly trim most trees and shrubs any time of year without issue. However, for heavier pruning—removing more than 4 inches of growth—we recommend waiting until the cooler months (late fall through early spring) when plants are dormant.
This timing allows the plant to recover with less stress and sets a strong, lasting shape for the entire growing season. Once spring and summer arrive and new growth kicks in, it’s much harder to maintain or correct the form—you’re mostly just keeping things in check rather than shaping them properly.
It’s also best to avoid heavy trimming while plants are actively blooming, as this can remove flower buds and reduce next season’s blooms.
Special Cases Some plants have unique needs:
- Hydrangeas — Timing depends on the variety (e.g., old-wood bloomers like bigleaf hydrangeas should be pruned right after flowering, while reblooming types are more forgiving).
- Roses — Prune in late winter/early spring before new growth starts, removing dead or crossing canes to encourage healthy blooms.
Our team knows the right approach for every plant in your yard and will tailor the trimming schedule to your specific landscape during your free on-site consultation. This ensures healthier plants, better shape, and more beautiful results all year long.
A standard bale of Longleaf pine straw bale covers about 25–35 square feet at a recommended 3-inch depth (ideal for weed suppression and moisture retention).
For a quick, rough estimate of about 20 square feet, spread your arms out wide (fingertip to fingertip) and imagine a circle with that full arm span as the diameter. That’s pretty close to 20 sq ft—close enough for a ballpark mental picture when you’re out in the yard estimating how much pine straw, mulch, or sod might cover a small bed or area! Don’t worry we bring extras in case you need it.
Another example:
- A small 200 sq ft bed needs 6–8 bales.
- A larger 500 sq ft area needs 15–20 bales. We can measure your beds during a free site visit, provide an exact estimate, and deliver/install if needed—or stop by our shop at 3765 Canton Hwy to pick up bales yourself.
Yes, absolutely we have extensive experience trimming trees and even removing larger trees completely. We have even have woredek on some hurricane cleanups. However, we do not climb trees or remove risky trees that may endanger your property, most of our work is done from the ground with pole saws or ladders.
